Cockapoo
The Cockapoo was developed in the 1950s with the objective of acquiring the good disposition of the Cocker Spaniel and low-shedding characteristic of the Poodle. As a cross-breed, size and coat quality widely differ from one dog to another. However, grooming is a breeze as its hair is usually kept au naturel. Its happy and gentle personality make it a great companion dog and a terrible guard dog. An average of 15 to 30 minutes of exercise daily is all it needs. Are considering a Cockapoo as a pet? More About the Breed

history

History

The Cockapoo is one of the most popular mixed-breed dogs in the UK and the USA, which have already been around since the 1950s. It is believed that the first breeding between a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle was accidental but nicely produced a low shedder and an even-tempered dog. It became popular as people loved the cute family dog that is intelligent, loving and virtually odorless.

Up until today, the Cockapoo is still considered a hybrid and not a full-fledge dog breed. In fact, Purebred dog breed associations like the Kennel Club still have not officially recognised it. There are also dividing philosophies among breeders whether multi-generation crossing or basic Cocker/Poodle cross breeding will be used.

appearance

Appearance

Since breed standards have not been set by breeders and enthusiasts, the appearance of Cockapoos varies. The size and weight depend on the type of parents used. It can range from 25 to 38 centimetres at the withers and 6 to 12 pounds.

The coat also differs from one dog to another in terms of length or whether it is straight or curly. Like most mixed breeds, the offspring tends to be somewhere in between. It should inherit the odorless and hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle. Cockapoos come in all colours and combinations seen in Cockers and Poodles like white, black, tan, red, brown, and brindle.

grooming

Grooming

Cockapoos require minimal grooming and its hair is typically kept in its natural state. Unlike Poodles, they do not require regular trips to the groomers. All it needs is daily brushing to avoid matting. It can be bathed once a few months or as needed. Some choose to have the coat clipped but it should only be trimmed a few inches around the eyes.

Besides coat grooming, dog owners must not forget to trim the dog’s nails regularly, clean its ears and check for ticks or fleas. Oral hygiene is also very important to prevent tartar buildup. One way to help strengthen your dog’s teeth is to buy chew toys. Simply put, grooming must include checking everything visible physically in your pet.

temperament

Temperament

The Cockapoo is known for its sweet, happy and gentle personality. A multi-generation crossing offspring usually takes the sweet disposition of the Cocker Spaniel and the intelligence of the Poodle. It thrives in the presence of its family and can suffer from separation anxiety when left alone for long periods. Although it is an adaptable breed, it should live inside the home since it was bred as a companion dog. It can be active but can also laze around with its owners. It gets along with everyone, humans and pets alike. It generally loves children but would thrive with older kids that know how to handle dogs.
intelligence

Intelligence

Since they are generally smart and eager to please its owners, trainings are quite easy. They are often used as service dogs because of their intellect and temperament. They can easily retain lessons and are one of the easiest to crate-train especially if you establish a routine. Like for any dog breed, food rewards and praises will be helpful.

Although each breed may have certain pre-disposition on temperament and intelligence. One must remember that unique personality can also be exhibited. A lot of factors play a significant role in shaping a dog’s character and even skills. These factors include its genetic makeup, environment, and training.

nutrition

Nutrition

Understanding the basic nutritional needs of your Cockapoo as a breed is necessary. However, also put into consideration its individual qualities.

Typical calorie needs of adult Cockapoos per day:

  • Senior and less active: up to 450 calories daily
  • Typical adults: up to 550 calories daily
  • Physically active/working dogs: up to 880 calories daily
In order to have a healthy and happy life, Cockapoos need a high quality diet comprising of whole foods. Try to avoid dog food brands with low-grade fillers and by-products. Since this crossbreed is prone to eye problems, its diet should include carrots, blueberries, eggs, and kale. To avoid joint problems and maintain a healthy coat, also include food and supplements high in Omega 3 fatty acids.

feeding

Feeding

A typical serving for an adult Cockapoo is 1/4 to 3/4 cup of excellent quality dry dog food per day. Like purebreds, crossbreeds are unique. Quantity and frequency depend on its age, size, build, activity level, and metabolism.
health

Health

As a small breed with a long lifespan, Cockapoos can live up to 14 to 18 years. They are generally healthy but can be predisposed to certain medical conditions of their parent breeds. These include Patellar Luxation, Liver Disease, Hip Dysplasia, allergies, Cataracts, and ear infections.
exercise

Exercise

Cockapoos have moderate energy level and require at least 15 to 30 minutes of exercise. This could be in the form of short walks and games in a fenced yard. They are agile dogs that enjoy swimming and retrieving games.
cost

Cost of Ownership

The costs of owning crossbreeds are trickier to determine compared to purebreds because there are more differing factors to consider. The average annual cost to raise a Cockapoo will be £800 to £1,000. High quality food alone will cost around £450 to £480 yearly. For grooming costs, it depends on how you want your dog to look like, whether you want to take to the groomers (around £30 per session) or do it yourself. You also have to factor in treats and accessories such as collar and leash, bowls, beds, grooming accessories, and others.

Veterinary and insurance coverage costs are another expense worth considering. Dogs do get sick and treatments can put a hole in your pocket if you are not prepared. Initial and yearly vaccination and deworming/flea treatments will cost £120 to £130. Basic insurance coverage for a lifetime policy will be around £450 a year. Consult with a Vet for Free.
